1. Reasons to Live in Allamuchy
Allamuchy township is a mostly rural area, located about 60 miles from New York City in northwestern New Jersey. Route 80 is only minutes from any location in the township, which makes for ideal commuting. Residents love the beautiful vistas and the convenience of nearby shopping, major commuter routes and mass transportation.
Allamuchy comes from the Lenape Indian word “Allamachetey” meaning the “the place between the hills”. Most of the 20.4 sq. miles of the township retain its rural farming roots and many of the gorgeous rolling properties offer views of the surrounding mountains. The Delaware Water Gap can be viewed from several points.
Incorporated in 1873, Allamuchy is located in Warren County. The 2010 census indicated a population of 4323. Some hamlets within the township are Alphano, Long Bridge, Quaker Church, Saxton Falls and Warrenville. The town of Hackettstown is close by and the children attend Hackettstown High School. Hackettstown is home to M&M Mars Corporation, Centenary College, NJ Transit Train Station, a vibrant Main Street business district, several strip malls with major anchors such as Walmart, Kohls, Home Depot, Target, Lowes, etc.
Panther Valley, a planned gated community of homes and townhomes encompasses 5.8 square miles and ¾ of the population resides there. Panther Valley consists of several “villages”. Each has its own distinctive style and types of housing. Though there are single family homes on modest lots, most of the construction is townhomes. Dotted throughout the community are swimming pools, tennis courts, recreation areas and a Robert Trent Jones 18-hole golf course and club house.
Outside the gates of the Panther Valley Community is the Panther Valley Mall. Located there is a convenience store, pharmacy, restaurants, bank, dry cleaners, hairdresser, etc.
The remaining residents (@1,000) reside on large parcels on the other 14+ square miles. These homes are typically on lots larger than an acre and have septic and wells.
The opportunity for outdoor activities abounds in Allamuchy. Several parks are in or near the township. The Delaware Water Gap recreation area and skiing are minutes away. The Allamuchy Board of Education owns Rutherford Hall, a cultural center and a museum. Rutherford Hall provides educational and enrichment opportunities for the residents of Allamuchy and the surrounding communities. Located nearby is Allamuchy Pond, which has a boat launch and great fishing and hiking.
Move to Allamuchy if you love the beautiful vistas but want nearby conveniences –all less than 60 miles from NYC.
2. Township Information and Links
Allamuchy was incorporated in 1873 and is located along the Pequest River in Warren County. The Musconetcong River forms the Township’s southeastern border. Allamuchy has a mayor/council form of government. The township is 20.4 square miles and the2010 census indicated a population of 4323. The municipal offices are located on Alphano Road.
Most of Allamuchy is still forests and farms. The only substantial development is the Panther Valley community at the juncture of Interstate 80 and Route 517, a1,200-home development of single-family homes, condominiums, and townhouses.
Township officials are trying to limit the further growth of development in the township. Open space acquisition is a major part of this strategy. The Township and its very active Environmental Commission are aggressively pursuing state Green Acres money and have put together a detailed open space plan for the Township.

For High School, the children attend Hackettstown High School. Building on tradition and success, the mission of the Hackettstown School District is to educate and inspire students through school, family, and community partnerships so that all become positive, contributing members of a global society, with a life-long commitment to learning.
