Washington Borough, Warren County

Located in Warren County, Washington Borough is at the intersections of Routes 57 and 31.  It is equal distance from Route 78 to the south and Routes 80 & 46 to the north. With in a couple of miles are the towns of Phillipsburg, Clinton and Hackettstown, all which have shopping and public transportation (train stations and buses), thus making it a convenient location for commuters.

Washington Borough itself has a bustling Main Street, with lovely wide sidewalks and array of shops, businesses and eating establishments.

Incorporated in 1868 and named for George Washington, it is one of the 10+ communities in New Jersey named for the first president.  It is surrounded by the township of Washington, and nearby is Washington Township, Morris County (aka Long Valley).

The community grew during the 19th century as a result of the transportation routes that ran through or near the borough. The Morris Canal ran along the north end of town and two rail lines of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad crossed within the borough

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the borough became a mecca of musical instruments manufacturers, the manufacture of organs in particular. A bustling downtown developed around these businesses. Many of the Victorian style houses in the borough, as well as Taylor Street School and Warren Hills Middle School (formerly Washington High School) were built during this period.

The 1990s saw a population boom in Warren County, which continues today, as high real estate prices and property taxes in New Jersey's northeastern counties push buyers to look further west.

Under this form of government, the mayor performs ceremonial duties and is an elected position by the voters.

The elected council appoints a city manager to oversee the daily operations and attends the council meetings but does not vote.
